Trip Itinerary
1
Lisbon
Day 1
We meet in Portugal's capital: Lisbon. I hope you've had time to discover this beautiful city before our trip because we'll directly take a bus to the start of our trail in Porto Covo. The bus trip takes 2-3 hours.
2
Porto Covo
Day 1-2
Once checked in to our accommodation, we'll prepare for the trip by buying snacks, filling our water bottles, looking at the route for the next day, and getting to know each other during a group dinner.
3
Vila Nova de Milfontes
Day 2-3
Today is our first hiking day, and we're starting off strong! This 20 km first part of the trail will take us past beautiful sandy beaches and dunes. We can have lunch at a local fishing harbor or pre-pack lunches to have wherever we'd like. It is a tiring hiking day because we'll be in mostly sandy terrain, but definitely worth it. We'll stop in Vila Nova de Milfontes, where we'll sleep for the night.
4
Almograve
Day 3-4
After our long hiking day we have a little less challenging day ahead of you, described by trailmakers, one that 'purifies the soul'. With 15.5 km ahead of us, we can take longer breaks and enjoy the area fully. We'll sleep in Almograve.
5
Zambujeira do Mar
Day 4-5
For bird lovers, this hiking day will be a real highlight! We'll be walking 22 km in total today, walking past high cliffs that are nesting sites for over 20 species of birds. We'll have lunch in the village of Cavaleiro. After a full day hike, we arrive at Zambujeira do Mar, our sleeping place for the night.
6
Odeceixe
Day 5-6
On our 5th day we'll walk 18.5 km with Odeceixe as our destination. We'll pass beautiful beaches and breathtaking cliffs. One of the best views of the entire walk is Odeceixe beach, seen from Ponta em Branco.
7
Aljezur
Day 6-7
Before starting our hike, we'll visit one of the few mills still in operation in Portugal. We have our longest hike today, with a stunning 22.5 km. This part of our route coincides with the Historical Way, another trail in the South of Portugal. We'll spend the night in Aljezur.
8
Praia da Arrifana
Day 7-8
This part of our journey from Aljezur to Arrifana is described as an 'authentic journey through time'. The 17.5 km will take us past traces of Prehistoric human life, let's see if we can spot them!
9
Carrapateira
Day 8-9
On day 8 we're hiking 20 km and the cliffs we walk past can reach up to 100 meters high! We'll have a picnic along the way for lunch wherever we'd like along the coast. We're spending the night in Carrapateira.
10
Vila do Bispo
Day 9-10
This trail offers some of the most beautiful, stunning scenes. We're only hiking 16 km today, but it's a trail that's a bit more challenging than the trails we've hiked so far (nothing we can't handle, though :). The shorter track leaves us plenty of time to appreciate the views or watch the sunset from our next sleeping destination in Vila do Bispo.
11
Sagres
Day 10-11
Today we're walking to the well known surfers town of Sagres. This walk is 20.5 km long and used to be the end destination of the Fisherman's trail before it got extended. Sagres marks the extreme southwest of Europe and translates to 'sacred', so we know it's special.
12
Salema
Day 11-12
Day 11 will be the most challenging trail of our whole trip. Along the 19.5 km route we're awarded with the view of enormous cliffs and at the end of the exhausting hiking day we can spot footprints of dinosaurs that crossed the Fisherman's Trail 250 million years ago. We'll get our well-deserved sleep in Selema.
13
Praia da Luz
Day 12-13
After yesterday, we got a shorter hike today. Only 12 km before we arrive in Luz, where we'll spend the night. If you brought binoculars, this is your time to take them out and admire the many birds along this trail.
14
Lagos
Day 13-14
Our last hiking day is the easiest, and we probably deserve to go a little slower after 2 weeks of challenging trails. We'll hike from Luz To Lagos, the most popular destination on our trip. Lagos is the place where the Portuguese set sail to discover the world and is therefore an important place for history. After the last hike, we can rest on one of the beautiful beaches. Lagos is famous for its nightlife, so we can spend our last night together celebrating our great adventure!
15
Lagos
Day 14
After breakfast the next morning, we'll say goodbye! The return trip to Lisbon is not included in this trip in order to give everyone the option to discover Lagos more, continue traveling down the coast or travel to a new country. The same bus we took from Lisbon to Porto Covo also passes through Lagos, so I'm happy to help with purchasing those tickets if needed.
